Sun Prairie has in recent years developed a number of traditional neighborhood developments (TND). Often referred to as "new urbanism," these neighborhoods focus on the pedestrian and the appearance of city streets.
The Sun Prairie Area School District administers local public education. The system consists of six elementary schools, two middle schools, one senior high, and one alternative high school.
There are three parochial schools in Sun Prairie. Founded in 1892, Sacred Hearts School is a Catholic school serving children of pre-K through 8th grade. Peace Evangelical Lutheran (pre-K-8) and Calvary Baptist Christian (K-8) have smaller student bodies. The School District opened a new Sun Prairie High School for students in grades 10-12 in fall 2010 and renovated the old high school for Upper Middle School students in grades 8 and 9.
Sun Prairie's Chamber of Commerce reports that the city's park system consists of 30 parks covering almost 400 acres, more than 13 ball diamonds, 11 outdoor skating rinks, two sledding hills, four soccer fields, a family aquatic center, a Youth Baseball Complex, a Municipal Pet Exercise Area, and a Skateboard Park.
Other recreation activities in Sun Prairie include golf, bowling, soccer and indoor hockey, an athletic club, library, YMCA, Civic Theatre, and a Colonial Club Senior Center.
